About Institute

Institute of Dendrology is located in one of the most beautiful part of Absheron peninsula in settlement of Mardakan. In 1895-1920 years this garden was private garden of the oil magnate Murtuza Mukhtarov. Soil of land in 12.5 hectares was brought had from Lankaran and was covered in 40 centimeters thick layer of soil. After 1920 garden was taken away and it was left unattented.

In 1926-1945academician-botanist the N.I.Vavilov organized and he was taking into account the features of garden climate, suitable land for growing here Eastern Transcaucasus branch of Institute of All-union Experience Botany and New Cultures. Prominent scientists such as academicians N.I.Vavilov, A.D.Strepkova, N.D.Kostechkiy, P.A.Shutov, Y.A.Jigarevich, S.D. Alekberov were conducting scientific-research works on the introduction of new species in the Mardakan arboretum, it had led to the development of plant growing in republic. The garden acted as an Experimental Station of Institute of “Horticulture, Viticulture and Subtropical plants” in1945-1964.The garden was in subordination of Ministry Health of Republic in 1964-1966.

Dendrological Park (Arboretum) in Mardakan existed in the structure of Ministry Health of the Azerbaijan SSR by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR №310 on May 17th 1966; it was included to the structure of Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR.

In 1966-1985 there were carried out research works in the direction of studying of 420 species of trees and bushes, more than 100 species are referred to the essential oil plants, technical and herbaceous plants (medicinal plants), 100 species to room plants, hothouses and the decorative flowers, plant species representing flora of the republic.

It has contributed to the destruction some of trees and shrubs in garden taking place in the republic of 1990 passed events, financial shortages, and shortages in employees and in technical capabilities.Since 1994 the leadership in Mardakan Arboretum entrusted to T.S.Mammadov. He carried out considerable measures in the direction of expansion actions of scientific, organizing and economical works in the Mardakan Arboretum.

In 1996 by the initiative of Presidium of ANAS the Mardakan Arboretum was subordinated to the Department of Biological Sciences and it was gained the legal status.

There are carried out in the garden the reconstruction, livability and building works, enriched species composition of collections.

In the living collections are existed near 1800 species, also 1540 forms and sorts. They are located in expositions and in the following collection areas: “Arboretum” (700 species), “Cultural plants” (600 species), “Decorative plants” (more than 480 species), “Fund greenhouses” (about 270 species).

These collections can consider by quality and ages at the level of the most known collections in the world.

There are rendered special influences to protection of the rare species affected by anthropogenous influences and by the natural ways of reducing.

In pools, rock gardens and greenhouses are collected collections from the entire world.

In the territory are created 2 museums: The museum of “Botany” is represented the life and activity of the academician N. I. Vavilov and the museum of the poet “Sergey Yesenin”.

By the decree of № 104 on 15th April 2014 the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic Mardakan Arboretum of ANAS is renamed into Institute of Dendrology of ANAS.In Institute of Dendrology of ANAS are carried extensive scientific-research works on the direction of studying of Azerbaijan flora biodiversity, fauna and soil cover, protection of genefund and profitable use. There are existed 4 departments, 9 laboratories and a one group. Laboratories activities are conducted in the following directions.— Adaptation of trees and shrub species to climate conditions of the republic; the analysis of introduction experiences of trees plants in the field zone of Azerbaijan; the preservation of the rare species and species being under the threat of endangered trees plants in condition of ех situ; — Formation of assortment of trees and shrub species for forests planting, for city  and forest-park landscapes, the definition of priority directions of introduction of trees and shrubs in the region and the formation of the collection;— Collection of herbariums; long-term keeping, cryopreservation of seeds, hormonal stimulation of flowering and fruiting, production of high quality seeds;— Influences of biotic and abiotic factors to the growth, development and health of trees; mechanism of the impacts of industrial pollutants on plants; study of genetic and ecological aspects to trees; dendrochronological assessment of trees health;          — An assessment the future of ecological results of trees introductions and associations with the transformation of the local plant communities in natural exotics;— The taxonomy of species in natural and cultural flora; the processes occurring in populations of species being under the threat of endangered and rare trees species; biometric analysis of a taxonomy rank of spore taxas; geographical variations in the natural ranges of taxas; chronological description of some region’s dendroflora; — In connection with influence of environmental factors and the mass reproduction of pests carrying out during the arbo-chronological researches; discovery of pathogenic of the organisms contributing of serious trees diseases; — Selection, grouping of economically important trees and shrubs grown in natural and cultural flora conditions of Azerbaijan, definition of areas, biological productivity, preparation of offers for the use in various areas of industry and implantation to production. It is directed to increase of biological resources and development of phototherapy.— In accordance to environmental pressures to protect public health and mobilization of plant resources of Azerbaijan: – Selection of new species, biological active substances, valuable introducents in Azerbaijan flora, studying of perspective upgrading of raw source bases of medicinal plants; — Researching of species variability of morphological and biochemical features of medicinal plants; phytochemical screening, studying of opportunities of their complex and rational use; — Obtaining of Essential oil of special origin, therapeutic and preventive products and their use. In research works are received the following significant results at the national level:There were held the monitoring of the flora in   2004-2014 years during the organized expeditions to the regions of Azerbaijan, by the primary variant in dendroflora 1116 species belonging to 266 genera and 92 families are grouped by APG III system, defined keywords, drawn illustrative and natural pictures, they have been added to the fund in amount of 8750 herbarium examples. As result of research work was published I Volume of “Azerbaijan dendroflora “(2011) of 110 species, 26 genera and 10 families Gymnosperm plants. There were published II Volume of “Azerbaijan dendroflora” covering of 40 families, 89 genera and 295 species of angiosperms. There are conducted research works on III volume. To write a scientific and study works was given to readers the book “Explanatory terms on anatomy and morphology of plants” (2013). There are researched rare and endangered species of trees and shrubs amount of 198 species, 71 genera and 45 families distributed in natural form of Azerbaijan flora, there are identified sources of danger of these plants and  published the book “Rare trees and shrubs of Azerbaijan” (2013 ). In this book are recommended the republication in future again “The Red Book” of Azerbaijan and including to it not yet entered species.
